It’s a widely observed custom for mourners to wear black clothes for a funeral, but like many funeral customs this one has begun to evolve over the years.
For the majority of funerals that we organise the mourners do tend to wear black, but some do break with tradition to be more relaxed, and less formal.
Some families ask attendees to wear bright colours to bring some cheerfulness to the day, whilst others ask attendees to wear the colour of the deceased’s favourite football team.
There are no strict rules about what you should wear, but to help with this question, for all of the funerals we plan we create a page on our website which includes all the details about the services and reception/wake. These pages also list whether the family has requested anything specific for clothing e.g. wear a favourite colour of the deceased. You can see a list of all current funerals here.
